FAQs

What is Sacred Dance?

The origins of Sacred Dance date back to the beginning of time. Most tribal cultures still maintain some type of Sacred Dance. It may be performed by shamans or tribal members depending on the intention behind the dance. Tribal cultures still maintain the connection to the earth. Whether it is conscious or unintentional, it still exists. Research has been done confirming the healing properties of this type of dance.

The movements used are very basic. What remains of this type of dance is very similar to modern day Middle Eastern or Belly Dancing. As with most esoteric knowledge, being shrouded in a playful or entertaining way has preserved it. What differs is that the Universal Dancer is danced for expression rather than performance. The similarities are on mainly the external or visible level. Although most Belly Dancers are not aware of the esoteric side of the dance, the engaging of this sexual energy can be quite obvious.

On the energetic level, the movements allow us to move the energy from the earth through our bodies and discharge it back to the earth. At this level, the energy loop is created between the woman and the earth. This is the first transmutation and it occurs in many ways. We are able to take the actual rhythm or pulsations emanating from the earth, the sine waves if you like, and amplify them through our bodies.

This is the same process used by musicians in playing or composing music. The musician is merely tapping into the earth rhythm and amplifying that wave on his instrument. In the case of Sacred Dance, the instrument is our body. Just as different waves may be played on different instruments, different waves resonate in different parts of our bodies. In time, we can play an entire piece of music (or mirror of the earth rhythm) on our bodies, allowing the different earth rhythms to resonate in different parts of our bodies.

What is Shakti Flow, Dance of the Kama Sutra and Ritual Temple Dance?
These are the foundational movements and stories from the temple traditions of sacred dance.  You will be introduced one sacred dance movement at a time.

What is the class format?

Classes start with some moving meditation type exercises and then move onto introducing one sacred dance movement at a time. Dancers are given space to explore and move within a piece of music. You will be guided to explore variations of the movement.

One of the key elements that makes this kind of class feel different is this: there is no choreography and the music is a fantastic selection of modern world fusion pieces. Dancers are asked to feel the music and express movement in their own way. The focus is on self-expression and connecting to the heat and voice of your body, not performance.

It is a beginner- intermediates level. We welcome all dancers, both practiced dancers and those who are new to dance.

What kind of music will I be dancing to?

Be prepared to take a fantastic musical journey. Zinnia chooses the music herself based on mood and vibration. From staccato to full rhythm, the music is designed to activate different parts of your body and bring your body into full flow. From Indian fusion, Indian classical and instrumental, ancient Hebrew vocals and Spansih flamenco, to contemporary Buddha Bar chillout.

This is a beautiful and wonderful experience, one that incorporates the dimension of sound into the experience as well. We can use the music as the guide on our journey. Music intensifies our experience, we connect to earth and dance to whatever rhythm is emanating from the earth. To do this takes a great deal of sensitivity, a sensitivity that can be acquired or developed. You will feel very connected to take a piece of music, which is already amplifying the rhythm, and dance to that.

What if I have a mediation, mindfulness, yoga or dance business? How can I use this form of dance in my business?

This is a beautiful question! Sacred dance connects you to your sacred feminine inner rhythm and to the language of your body. Sacred Dance is an ancient teaching. It is the practice of Feminine Embodiment. If you want to teach your students and clients how to Embody The Feminine, you must first be this yourself. Sacred Dance is a wonderful way for you to BE EMBODIED.

The more you practice, you can bring fluid movement in your yoga practice or introduce shakti flow into your mindfulness exercises, even improve the gracefulness of your movement if you are already a dancer.

You will be given a playlist which you can practice this movement in your own home, an instruction manual of poses and a certificate of completion.

Sacred Dance Ibiza Teacher Trainings are coming in the future and there will be a deeper opportunity to teach Sacred Dance as a practioner, be an affiliate and weave this into your business.

How is sacred dance different from temple dance?

Traditional temple dances take 10-15 years to learn and master because you must learn sacred geometry, classical music, musical language, mythology, storytelling, footwork, technique and choreography.

In Sacred Dance, it is much more spontaneous. We bring elements of temple dance into creative fusion and work with the easiest and lightest movements that all women can access regardless of body type, age or size. There is so much room for freedom and self-expression in sacred dance.

Most importantly, you will learn how to channel the movement that wants to flow through you. You feel the ecstasy and heat and longing deeply buried in your body all at once.

I have seen many women and young girls transform and blossom through this dance. It is a very transformative experience to speak to your body once again. Let me unlock you. Let me help you find that dark, gorgeous, wild, magical Goddess you have been hiding.

How often is this workshop taught?

This is the first Intensive 4-Day Workshop in 2015. Based on this year's attendance, we will decide on continuing this into next year, 2016.

While the feminine is fluid and ever-changing, I do teach at the Ibiza Spirit Festival every October. You are welcome to stop by for a FREE taster session of Shakti Flow.
